Credits and licenses
Bible Strands is built entirely on scholarship other people gave away. Most of what makes it work — the tagged Hebrew and Greek, the cross-references, the geography — represents years of someone else's labor, released freely. Several of those licenses require attribution. All of them deserve it, so every source is named here whether its license demands it or not.
Scripture
- Berean Standard Bible free for all uses
- The default reading text, and the basis of the word-level interlinear. Published by bereanbible.com, which places it in the public domain and asks only that its free status be passed on. The red-letter markup — which words are spoken by Jesus — is derived from the BSB's own USX edition and carries the same terms.
- King James Version public domain
- Offered alongside the Berean text because the older cross-reference scholarship was written against it. Public domain in the United States and most of the world. In the United Kingdom it remains under perpetual Crown copyright, administered by Cambridge University Press.
Hebrew and Greek
- STEPBible — TAHOT and TAGNT CC BY 4.0
- The Translators Amalgamated Hebrew Old Testament and Greek New Testament, from STEPBible.org at Tyndale House, Cambridge, released under CC BY 4.0. This is the word-by-word tagging that makes the literal view possible at all — every word of Scripture joined to its lemma, its grammar and its Strong's number. Nothing else in this project would work without it.
- STEPBible — TIPNR CC BY 4.0
- Translators Individualised Proper Names with all References, also from STEPBible.org, released under CC BY 4.0. Every named person in Scripture, told apart from others of the same name, with their parents, spouses, siblings and children and every verse that names them. The Lineage tab and the person tiles are built from it.
- OpenScriptures Strong's dictionaries CC BY-SA 4.0
- The Hebrew and Greek lexicon entries behind every root tile, from the OpenScriptures digitization of Strong's. Share-alike: the published copy of that data stays under the same license.
Connections
- OpenBible.info cross-references CC BY
- Roughly 340,000 weighted cross-references from OpenBible.info, each carrying a count of how many readers judged the two verses to belong together. Every Link and Leap on the canvas comes from this dataset. The weighting is what lets the strongest threads sort themselves to the top.
Reference
- Easton's Bible Dictionary public domain
- M. G. Easton's Illustrated Bible Dictionary, 1897 — about four thousand entries on people, places, objects and ideas, with their citations. Long out of copyright. It is Victorian scholarship: excellent on words, customs and geography, and dated in places on history and archaeology. Read it as a well-informed nineteenth-century guide rather than a current one.
Maps
- OpenBible.info geocoding CC BY
- Coordinates and verse references for the places named in Scripture, from OpenBible.info.
- Natural Earth public domain
- Coastlines, rivers, lakes and borders, from Natural Earth, explicitly placed in the public domain. The TopoJSON land layer is world-atlas by Mike Bostock (ISC), built from the same data.
- OpenStreetMap ODbL
- Bible Strands does not use OpenStreetMap tiles or data. The See it today control opens openstreetmap.org in a new tab at the place you were looking at; map data there is © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License.
Translations we link to but never copy
The NIV, ESV and other modern translations are under copyright and are not part of this corpus. Where a verse offers to open in one of them, it is a plain link out to the publisher's own site. No copyrighted translation is stored, cached or served here.
What is measured, and by whom
One third party sees your visit: Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views. It sets no cookies, does not fingerprint your browser, and does not track you between sites or between visits. There is nothing else — no advertising network, no tag manager, no session recording, and no account to sign into. Your strands, your saved verses and your reading stay in your own browser and are never sent anywhere.
Bible Strands is free, carries no advertising, and is funded by donation.
