2 Chronicles 33:14

After this, Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David from west of Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate, and he brought it around the hill of Ophel and heightened it considerably. He also stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.

Study note

Setting — Manasseh acts immediately after his repentance and return to Jerusalem, shifting from idolatrous worship to fortifying the capital and Judah’s fortified cities.

The words — The Hebrew בָּנָה (ba.Nah) means he rebuilt, and חוֹמָה חִיצוֹנָה (cho.Mah chi.tzo.Nah) translates literally as outer wall.

The thread — The verse traces the restored wall from the Gihon valley to the Fish Gate and around Ophel, parallel to Jotham’s earlier Ophel work and the later Fish Gate reconstruction.

Why it lands — The text records a physical fortification following spiritual restoration, requiring the reader to observe that renewed leadership produces immediate, measurable action.

The Hebrew words

King James Version

Now after this he built a wall without the city of David, on the west side of Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the fenced cities of Judah.
