Study note

Setting — The Elder writes to a community of believers, placing this verse between a warning to hold fast (v. 8) and a command not to receive false teachers (v. 10).

The words — προαγων (proagōn), "running ahead," carries a military sense of outpacing one's formation, set against μένων (menōn), "abiding," the same verb Jesus uses in John 15:4.

The thread — The teaching in view is Christ's own, which he says comes from the Father (John 7:16), and the denial it guards against is identified in 1 John 2:22 as the mark of the antichrist.

Why it lands — The verse offers no middle ground: remaining in Christ's teaching or not having God. It asks the reader to test their own position against the apostolic teaching, not against a feeling or experience.
