Traditionally Moses, with the same question over it as Genesis.

When

The events are usually placed in the thirteenth or fifteenth century BC, depending on how the chronology is read.

What it is

A people are brought out of slavery, given a law, and taught to live with God in their midst.

What to watch for

It changes shape halfway. The first half is a rescue story; the second is largely instructions for building a tent, which is the point rather than an appendix.
