John 8:44

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

Study note

Setting — Jesus addresses the Jewish leaders who have just claimed Abraham as their father (v.39), in a confrontation that has moved from questioning to direct accusation.

The words — ὑμεῖς (humeis) is the emphatic "you yourselves," isolating this group from any other; διαβολός (diabolos) is the noun that names the father, not a generic "evil spirit" but a specific figure.

The thread — 1 John 3:8 echoes the "from the beginning" language, calling the devil the one who has been sinning "from the very start"; 1 John 3:12 ties Cain's murder to belonging to the evil one, and Acts 13:10 applies "child of the devil" to a practitioner of deceit.

Why it lands — The verse does not ask whether you believe a doctrine about Satan; it asks whose desires you carry out and whose language you speak when you lie.

King James Version

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
