Joshua 24:32

And the bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up out of Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the plot of land that Jacob had purchased from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver. So it became an inheritance for Joseph’s descendants.

Study note

Setting — Joshua records these details for the assembled tribes of Israel at Shechem, concluding his final address by noting the burial of Joseph’s remains.

The words — The Hebrew עַצְמ֣וֹת (atzmot) literally means "bones," and הֶעֱל֨וּ (he'elu) means "they had brought up," directly describing the physical transport of the remains from Egypt.

The thread — The text explicitly links this burial to the land Jacob bought in Genesis 33:19 and the oath Joseph secured in Genesis 50:25, which Moses later executed in Exodus 13:19.

Why it lands — The passage states that the plot became an inheritance for Joseph’s descendants, requiring the reader to acknowledge the recorded transfer of property without adding theological speculation.
