Nahum 1:14

The LORD has issued a command concerning you, O Nineveh: “There will be no descendants to carry on your name. I will cut off the carved image and cast idol from the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible.”

Study note

Setting — Yahweh addresses Nineveh directly, pronouncing judgment immediately after promising to break Judah’s yoke and just before announcing the arrival of peace.

The words — יִזָּרַע (yi.za.Ra') means it will be sown, and מִ/שִּמְ/ךָ֖ (mi./shim./Kha) translates to from/ name/ your, forming the literal phrase “not sown from your name again.”

The thread — The theme of erased lineage and destroyed idols appears in Psalms 109:13, which prays for a wicked man’s descendants to be cut off, and Micah 5:13, which promises the removal of carved images. Proverbs 10:7 contrasts this fate with the enduring memory of the righteous.

Why it lands — It requires the reader to acknowledge that divine judgment permanently terminates dynastic legacy and idolatrous worship, leaving only the contrast between the condemned and the delivered.
