Zechariah 10:6

I will strengthen the house of Judah and save the house of Joseph. I will restore them because I have compassion on them, and they will be as though I had not rejected them. For I am the LORD their God, and I will answer them.

Study note

Setting — The LORD speaks directly, declaring restoration to both Judah and Joseph (Ephraim) in the context of military victory over their enemies (10:5) and the ensuing national joy (10:7).

The words — גִּבַּרְתִּי (gi.bar.Ti), "I will make strong," from the root גבר (gabar), which reappears in 10:12: "I will strengthen them in the LORD." The pairing of strengthening and saving (אוֹשִׁיעַ, 'o.Shi.a) mirrors Zephaniah 3:19, where the same verb is joined to gathering the scattered.

The thread — Zechariah 10:12 repeats the same root גבר and adds the qualifying phrase "in the LORD," suggesting the strengthening is mediated through relationship rather than raw power. Zephaniah 3:19 pairs the identical verb אוֹשִׁיעַ with the reversal of affliction and the gathering of the exiled.

Why it lands — The verse states that God's own compassion is the stated cause of restoration, not Israel's repentance or merit. It asks the reader to sit with the claim that a prior rejection can be rendered as though it never happened, and to notice that the text attaches no conditions to the promise.

King James Version

And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the Lord their God, and will hear them.
