What does the Bible say about forgiveness?
Both directions: being forgiven, and the far harder business of forgiving.
For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.Matthew 6:14
The two are tied together in the Lord's Prayer, and Jesus returns to it immediately after.
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?”Matthew 18:21
Peter offers seven times, thinking himself generous. The answer is not a number.
Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.Colossians 3:13
The measure given is how you were forgiven, not what was deserved.
As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.Psalms 103:12
As far as the east is from the west — a distance chosen because it does not meet.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9
Confession and faithfulness, put as a matter of His character rather than your performance.
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His garments by casting lots.Luke 23:34
Said while it was being done to Him, which is the hardest verse on this page.
