What does the Bible say about shame?

The distinction the Bible keeps making is between what you did and what you are.

And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves.Genesis 3:7

The first thing that happens after the first wrong is hiding.

Those who look to Him are radiant with joy; their faces shall never be ashamed.Psalms 34:5

Their faces are never covered with shame — the image is of looking up.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.Romans 8:1

No condemnation. The verse is about status, not about feeling.

Instead of shame, My people will have a double portion, and instead of humiliation, they will rejoice in their share; and so they will inherit a double portion in their land, and everlasting joy will be theirs.Isaiah 61:7

Instead of shame, a double portion — an exchange rather than an erasure.

“No one, Lord,” she answered. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Now go and sin no more.”John 8:11

Neither do I condemn you, said before the instruction, not after it.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.Hebrews 12:2

Scorning its shame — the cross treated as the shameful thing it was.
