Deuteronomy 9:3

But understand that today the LORD your God goes across ahead of you as a consuming fire; He will destroy them and subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them swiftly, as the LORD has promised you.

Study note

Setting — Moses addresses Israel on the plains of Moab, immediately after warning them the Anakim are formidable (v. 2) and immediately before forbidding them to credit their own righteousness for conquest (v. 4).

The words — וְיָדַעְתָּ (ve./ya.da'.Ta) is a jussive imperative, "know!" not a mere statement of future knowledge; the BSB's "understand" softens the command. The participle הָעֹבֵר (ha./'o.Ver) describes God as "the one who is passing over," an ongoing, imminent movement rather than a one-time event.

The thread — "Consuming fire" (אֵשׁ אֹכֶלֶת) recurs in Deuteronomy 4:24 and is quoted in Hebrews 12:29; the "who can stand against" motif from the surrounding context (v. 2) echoes in Romans 8:31.

Why it lands — The verse is a command to reframe: the conquest is not Israel's achievement but Yahweh's passage, and the reader is told to stop calculating odds before the battle begins.

The Hebrew words

King James Version

Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the Lord hath said unto thee.
