Unknown, and it says so by saying nothing. The early church guessed Paul, Barnabas, Apollos and Priscilla; the Greek is unlike Paul's.

When

Probably before AD 70, since it discusses temple sacrifice as ongoing.

What it is

A sustained argument, addressed to people tempted to go back, that what they have now is better than what they left.

What to watch for

It reads more like a sermon than a letter, and it quotes the Old Testament more densely than anything else in the New.
