Hosea 2:15

There I will give back her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor into a gateway of hope. There she will respond as she did in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt.

Study note

Setting — The LORD speaks to Israel, personified as a wife, in a future moment of restoration that follows the wilderness period of verse 14. It is a covenantal promise framed in marital language, leading directly into the address shift of verse 16.

The words — פֶּתַח (pethach) literally means "a door" or "entrance"; the BSB's "gateway of hope" adds a qualifier not present in the Hebrew noun itself. The image is of a physical opening, not an abstract concept.

The thread — The "days of youth" and "came up out of Egypt" echo Jeremiah 2:2's "devotion of your youth" and Hosea 11:1's "out of Egypt I called My son." Ezekiel 28:26 pairs secure dwelling with planting vineyards, a parallel restoration motif.

Why it lands — It asks the reader to hold that the same place which marked failure (Achor, Joshua 7) is redefined as an entrance rather than erased. Restoration here is not a reset but a repurposing of what already happened.

King James Version

And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.
