Isaiah 40:28

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary; His understanding is beyond searching out.

Study note

Setting — Yahweh speaks to Jacob and Israel, who in the preceding verse have declared that their way is hidden from God and their claim ignored. This is the opening declaration of the comfort section (Isaiah 40–55), directed at exilic despair.

The words — עוֹלָם (o.Lam), "perpetuity," modifies אֱלֹהֵי to produce "God of perpetuity" rather than a simple adjective "everlasting." The term carries the sense of unbounded duration, not merely long duration.

The thread — Psalms 147:5 affirms God's understanding has no limit; Romans 11:33 calls His judgments unsearchable; 1 Timothy 1:17 titles Him "King eternal."

Why it lands — The verse removes the premise that God is a finite being who can be outlasted or outthought. It asks the reader to stop measuring God by human limits and to reckon with a Creator who does not deplete.

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
