Leviticus 14:17

And the priest is to put some of the oil remaining in his palm on the right earlobe of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on top of the blood of the guilt offering.

Study note

Setting — The text records a divine directive to the priest administering the cleansing ritual. He acts at the moment immediately following the application of the guilt offering’s blood to the recipient.

The words — יִתֵּן (yi.Ten) = he will place and עַל (‘al) = on describe the priest’s action of depositing the remainder of the oil onto the recipient.

The thread — The application of substances to the right earlobe, thumb, and big toe of the right foot appears in Exodus 29:20 and Leviticus 14:14. Leviticus 8:30 describes Moses sprinkling oil and blood on Aaron and his garments, not on the body.

Why it lands — The text requires the reader to recognize the precise, repeated physical sequence used to mark consecration and cleansing. It demands attention to the specific order of application without adding symbolic meaning beyond what the ritual action establishes.
