What does the Bible say about grief?
Scripture does not hurry grief, and it does not tidy it. One of these passages does not resolve at all.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.Psalms 34:18
Near to the brokenhearted — presence, before any explanation.
Jesus wept.John 11:35
Jesus wept, at a grave He was about to open. The shortest verse in the Bible.
You have removed my beloved and my friend; darkness is my closest companion.Psalms 88:18
This psalm ends here, in the dark, with no turn. It is in the Bible exactly as it stands.
Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail.Lamentations 3:22
Written over a destroyed city, and placed in the middle of five poems of mourning.
‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”Revelation 21:4
A promise about the end, not about this week.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.Romans 12:15
What to do for someone else grieving: weep with them. No advice required.
Every passage here is quoted from the Berean Standard Bible and checked against it. The other topics.
