Study note
Setting — The passage records a divine command given to the Israelites outlining the calendar of appointed festivals. It appears immediately after instructions regarding Sabbath offerings and vows, and directly before the specific directives for gathering festival foliage.
The words — The verse anchors the timing with יוֹם (Yom) = day and בְּאָסְפְּכֶם (be./'as.pe./Khem) = when you gather. These terms establish the festival as strictly contingent upon the completion of the agricultural harvest.
The thread — The festival is introduced in Leviticus 23:34 and reiterated in Deuteronomy 16:13 with the specific duration of seven days. Exodus 23:16 references the same harvest festival but does not specify its length.
Why it lands — The text commands observance of a seven-day festival following the harvest, mandates complete rest on the first and eighth days, and requires the gathering of specific trees and branches to rejoice before God.
